Ukraine and US agree on 30-day ceasefire, military aid to resume
Ukraine and the US have agreed on a 30-day temporary ceasefire and the resumption of military aid.
According to a statement released by the Office of the President of Ukraine following discussions between Ukrainian and US delegations in Saudi Arabia, Russia’s approval is necessary for this step to be implemented.
The statement read: “Ukraine has expressed its readiness to accept the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, with the option of extension by mutual agreement of the parties, provided that Russia also accepts and implements these conditions. The US will convey to Russia that mutual consent is the key to achieving peace.”
As a result of the negotiations, the decision was made to resume military aid and intelligence sharing between the US and Ukraine.
The joint statement noted: “The US is immediately lifting the pause on intelligence sharing and resuming security assistance.”
The Office of the President of Ukraine stated: “Both delegations agreed to determine the composition of the negotiating groups and to immediately begin negotiations to achieve a sustainable peace that will ensure Ukraine’s long-term security. The US has committed to discussing these specific proposals with Russian representatives. The Ukrainian delegation reiterated the need to involve European partners in the peace process.”
Additionally, according to information on the website of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump agreed to finalize a comprehensive agreement for the development of Ukraine’s critical mineral resources as soon as possible.
This agreement aims to “help strengthen the Ukrainian economy and guarantee its long-term prosperity and security.”
Commenting on the results of the talks, Zelenskyy said: “At this meeting with the Americans, we, as Ukraine, had three proposals: silence in the sky (missiles, bombs, long-range drones), silence at sea, and, above all, real confidence-building measures for the situation where the diplomatic process continues, such as the release of prisoners. The American side understands our arguments and accepts our proposals. I would like to thank President Trump for the constructive discussions of our teams.”
Zelenskyy emphasized that during the contacts in Saudi Arabia, the US side offered to “immediately go one step further” and try to ensure a complete ceasefire for 30 days.
“Not just missiles, drones, and bombs, not just in the Black Sea, but along the entire front line,” Zelenskyy said.
Adding that Kyiv found this proposal positive and is ready for this step, Zelenskyy said: “The US needs to convince Russia of this. So we agree, and if the Russians also agree, then the ceasefire will come into effect at that moment.”
White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt previously stated that the meeting between the delegations of the two countries was productive and that the US side had received “positive news.”
Leavitt said at a press conference: “The news we received and conveyed to the President regarding this meeting is positive.”
